Certificate of Eligibility

How do I get my VA home loan COE?

A Certificate of Eligibility (COE) shows a lender that you meet VA’s service-based requirements for the home loan benefit. You can request it online, through a lender, or by mail.

Short answer: Start with the VA’s online COE request, or ask a lender to retrieve it through VA’s system. If you apply by mail, you’ll generally complete VA Form 26-1880. The documents you need depend on your service category and records.

What is a VA Certificate of Eligibility?

The COE—sometimes called a VA loan eligibility certificate—confirms eligibility for the VA home loan benefit and may show entitlement information. It is an important step, but it is not a mortgage commitment, a preapproval, or a guarantee of a no-down-payment loan. A lender still reviews your application and the property.

Three ways to request a COE

  1. Online: Use VA.gov’s home loan COE service. Sign in and follow the instructions for your service history.
  2. Through a lender: Ask a VA-participating lender whether it can request or retrieve your COE electronically.
  3. By mail: Complete VA Form 26-1880 and mail it to the regional loan center listed on the form. A mailed request may take longer.

What documents might I need?

Veterans commonly use a DD214. Active-duty service members may need a statement of service signed by an authorized official. National Guard and Reserve documentation depends on whether and how the member was activated; records can include DD214 forms, points statements, or other service documents. A qualifying surviving spouse may need different forms and supporting records.

These are examples, not a complete checklist. The VA’s COE instructions provide the current list for each situation. Keep your personal information secure and submit it only through official VA or lender channels.

What happens after I receive my COE?

Share the COE with your lender and discuss a preapproval, income and credit documentation, your budget, and the property you want to buy. The lender orders a VA appraisal for a purchase. An appraisal estimates value and checks VA minimum property requirements; it is not the same as a home inspection and does not guarantee that the home is free of defects.

COE request checklist

  • Choose the request route: VA.gov, a participating lender, or mail using the current VA form.
  • Use VA's instructions to identify documents for your service category; common examples include a DD214 or an authorized statement of service.
  • Check the COE when it arrives for your name, entitlement information, and any prior loan charged to entitlement.
  • If information is missing or looks wrong, ask VA how to correct the record before relying on the COE for a purchase plan.
